Sandy Hook

Keep the boardwalks, amusement parks and louder-than-loud beachfront bars that pepper the Jersey Shore (even though they're a stone's throw.) For those of you who want a truly relaxing beach experience complete with acres of rolling sand dunes and the tranquilizing sounds of breaking waves, you've arrived- It's Sandy Hook!

The northernmost "true beach" in New Jersey, Sandy Hook offers seven miles of pristine oceanfront playground with an incredible range of attractions and top-notch facilities. Sandy Hook is a 1,665 acre primarily undeveloped barrier beach penninsula. It features a 7 mile stretch of breathtaking ocean and bay beaches, a spectacular holly forest, excellent surf fishing, dune trails, and over 300 species of migratory shorebirds. Magnificent sunrises and sunsets! You can find popular beaches with excellent facilities or peaceful secluded areas. Sandy Hook is also the home of gay popular and clothing optional Gunnison Beach. Ranger guided nature tours available. Summer Beach Concert Series. Visitors Center open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. year round. Call (732) 872-5970 for more information or visit their website at Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area.

Gunnison

For our friends who shun tan lines, Gunnison Beach section of Sandy Hook National Recreation Area is an "officially" sanctioned, clothing-optional beach! Part of the Sandy Hook unit of the Gateway National Recreational Area, Gunnison Beach is the only nude beach in New Jersey and is the largest clothing-optional beach on the East Coast. Gunnison attracts over 5,000 naturists per weekend in the summer months and is fully sanctioned with National Park Service Lifeguards (no hassels) with facilities at the entrance. There is also a "snack shack" on the beach. There is a large group of volleyball players at Gunnison Beach. The net is in place from early spring to late fall. If you love to play volleyball, come try your luck at beating their championship team. The beach fills so quickly on the weekend that they close it down to car traffic around 11AM - then reopen around 2 PM. Enjoy your beach experience "au naturale!"
